The Apple Pickers' Cottages are three private, self-catering cottages on the shore of the tidal Waimea Inlet, just five minutes from the coastal village of Māpua.
The natural landscape is the property's defining feature — five acres of regenerating native bush with expansive views across the inlet to the mountains beyond. The outlook changes constantly with the tides and light, and with exceptional dark skies at night, this is a place to settle into the rhythm of the tides, the birdlife and the weather, while still being close to the cafés, restaurants and village life of Māpua.
Originally built to house seasonal apple pickers, the three cottages have been thoughtfully renovated, preserving their original charm and sense of place. Each is individually styled with mid century/Scandinavian influences — warm wood-lined interiors, natural textiles, quality furnishings, original art, and carefully selected books on New Zealand art, literature, Māori culture, wildlife and ecology.

This is a place where you can spend all day outdoors exploring the Nelson/Tasman region or you can be completely content moving no further than your deck. The Waimea Inlet is one of New Zealand's most important coastal ecosystems and an internationally significant habitat for migratory shorebirds. The tidal estuary provides outstanding opportunities for wildlife observation, photography and quiet immersion in nature.
Over the past 25 years we have been transitioning what was once a working apple orchard back to its natural coastal ecosystem. The restoration of the coastal forest and shoreline bird habitat is ongoing, with over 30,000 native trees, shrubs, and grasses already planted. Guests are welcome to explore the walking trail that winds through the regenerating forest. By staying at the Apple Pickers’ Cottages you are helping to fund this conservation project that is contributing to the future resilience of a precious coastal ecosystem.

Staying at The Apple Pickers’ Cottages puts you right in the middle of the Nelson Tasman region.
Located halfway between Nelson City and the Abel Tasman National Park, there are day trips in all directions. Our accommodation offers the perfect base to explore a choice of three National Parks for hiking (Abel Tasman, Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes), golden sand beaches and rivers for swimming, cycle trails, mountain biking, and a variety of golf courses.
For culinary-minded travellers, Nelson’s sunny climate provides ideal growing conditions for a wonderful array of wine, cider, craft beer, and artisanal food made by passionate local producers. You can visit cellar doors, breweries, and local markets to gather delicious produce to bring home to your cottage.
